K-9 Officer Rocky Makes An Impressive Comeback

Last Wednesday, K-9 officer Rocky was shot during a large-scale manhunt in which the U.S. Marshal’s Service attempted to apprehend Robert Lee Davis, the wanted suspect who had an arrest warrant for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

Davis was also wanted on aggravated sexual assault charges stemming from an alleged incident in April of the previous year.

Over the course of the manhunt, Deputy Jesus Vargas, a 17-year veteran of the Brazoria County Sheriff’s Office was fatally shot. Fortunately, K-9 officer Rocky found the suspect hiding behind a dumpster, alerting the officers and providing them Davis’ location, this heroic act concluded with the courageous dog being wounded by a gunshot, as first reported by KHOU11.

Rocky was quickly loaded onto a Texas DPS helicopter and transported to medical facilities at Westbury Animal Hospital. The hospital provided immediate care, and Rocky was later reported to be in stable condition.

Fortunately, the gunshot’s trajectory did not damage Rocky’s vital organs.

“Narrowly missed his spine, which was pretty amazing,” Dr. Jeff Chalkley from Westbury Animal Hospital, told KHOU11. “God was there and directed that bullet away from his vital organs.”

The brave K-9 officer Rocky is recovering well, his injury is expected to heal soon, which means Rocky is going home in a short time.

“He’s the luckiest dog I’ve seen; you call that luck or the hand of God, but that bullet, I mean, could have ended his life instantly.”, Chalkley also said.

And after some well-deserved rest and vacations, Rocky will be returning to his highly important duties in which this good boy manages to “catch more bad guys and hopefully get rid of evil in the world.”

The tragic incident sadly took Jesus Vargas’ life, beloved husband and father, nonetheless, his dedication to his family and service to the community were honored following his sorrowful passing.
