Facebook Community Lashes at Gov. Abbott for Defending Voter Restriction Bill

Gov. Greg Abbott’s recent Facebook post, in which he shared a Houston Chronicle opinion piece on the bill that was reintroduced during a special session regarding voting restriction, created a tremendous amount of controversy during the weekend.

The article was written by Rep. Andrew Murr, R-Junction, in which he described the tumultuous debate in the Texas Legislature as “based on misinformation and hyperbole.”

This is the second time the bill is introduced into the Texas legislature and includes banning drive-thru voting, 24-hour voting, and election officials from sending vote-by-mail applications before a voter requests one. The first time the bill was introduced by, earlier this year in May, thanks to a walkout by Democrats at the House.

Reactions to Mr. Abbott’s post didn’t wait, and thousands of comments flooded the Governor’s publication.

“The facts are that you Lie!!!” Norma-Jean Anaya wrote, making a reference to how Mr. Abbott started the post. She finished “You have oppressed the vote by limiting rural counties to 1 voting location. Now you and the GOP want to further oppress and suppress voting.”

“Abbott wouldn’t know an honest fact if it was put right in front of him.” Michelle Thweatt commented.

Sarah Freed wrote at the Governor’s post: “All you folks still stuck on the “Trump was cheated” bandwagon. This was the largest voter turn-out in history. He lost. Many Republicans did NOT vote for him! Next!!!”

Troy Appel said: “Voting will be fair, if it’s someone Abbott and his colleagues want voting. (If you’re White)”

Right now, the only thing stopping Mr. Abbott and the GOP from passing this special law are the bulk of the 67 House Democrats who traveled to Washington, D.C. to deny the Texas House quorum.
