Texas Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick announced Friday that he will seek a fourth term, solidifying his place as one of the most enduring and influential figures in Texas politics. Patrick has long been a driving force behind the Texas Senate’s conservative momentum, pushing for policies like stricter border control, expanded religious presence in schools, and sweeping property tax cuts. A former radio host turned politician, Patrick first entered public office in 2007 as a state senator representing Harris County. In 2014, he unseated then-Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst, marking the beginning of a tenure that has since redefined the role’s power and visibility, as first reported by The Texas Tribune.
Patrick has championed policies such as tightening border enforcement, increasing the role of religion in public schools, and implementing broad property tax cuts. A former radio host who transitioned into politics, he began his public service career in 2007 as a state senator representing Harris County— the same county that is currently without representation until a special election on November 4, after Governor Greg Abbott argued the delay would give officials “sufficient time to prepare for such an important election,” according to the AP.
Trump, who has maintained close political ties with Patrick, praised him on X and Truth Social, crediting the lieutenant governor with helping steer Texas’s conservative agenda and vowing his continued support. Patrick served as Trump’s Texas campaign chair in both the 2016 and 2020 elections.
“I am proud to once again endorse Texas Lieutenant Governor, Dan Patrick, for Re-Election.
As Texas Chair of our Presidential Campaigns in 2016, 2020, and 2024, Dan has been an incredible friend to our Movement, helping us WIN BIG in the Primaries and General Elections. In his next Term, Dan will fight tirelessly alongside of us to Secure the Border, Stop Migrant Crime, Grow the Economy, Cut Taxes and Regulations, Champion School Choice, Support our Great Military/Vets, Restore American Energy DOMINANCE, and Strongly Protect our always under siege Second Amendment. Dan Patrick has my Complete and Total Endorsement – He will never let you down!” wrote Trump via his X account.
While recent polling from the Texas Politics Project at UT Austin shows a divided public—37% of voters overall approve of Patrick’s performance—his standing remains strong among conservatives. Experts say Patrick is unlikely to face any serious challenge in the race. Political strategist Tyler Norris noted that Patrick’s command over the Senate and influence over legislative priorities have transformed the chamber’s efficiency and political alignment.
