Texas Senate Battle Intensifies As Cornyn Feuds With Paxton

U.S. Senator John Cornyn has formally declared his intention to seek a fifth term in Washington, setting the stage for what could be a contentious Republican primary in 2026. The Texas Republican, who has served in the Senate since 2002, emphasized his support for former President Donald Trump and criticized the policies of President Joe Biden in his campaign announcement video, as reported by the Austin American Statesman. 

Cornyn framed his candidacy as one focused on restoring “law and order,” cutting taxes, and reclaiming American jobs and supply chains—issues he argues are central to the Trump agenda. He also referenced concerns about the rise in illegal immigration under Biden’s administration.

However, Cornyn’s announcement quickly drew sharp criticism from Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, who has indicated interest in challenging the incumbent in the Republican primary. Paxton took to social media, accusing Cornyn of distancing himself from both Trump and the people of Texas, pointing to past remarks where Cornyn had questioned Trump’s political future.

Paxton fired back with a blunt response on his X account, writing, “Are you delusional? You’ve constantly turned your back on Texans and President Trump. Texans won’t believe your lies or forget how you’ve consistently worked to undermine the President.”

Political analysts predict the race will be bitter and expensive, with some estimating a primary battle could cost upwards of $40 million. Despite Cornyn’s significant fundraising advantage, with a reported $4.1 million war chest to start the year, Paxton has suggested that he could mount a serious challenge with the right financial backing. A recent poll showed that while both candidates have strong support among Republicans, Paxton holds a slight edge in favorability.

The feud between the two Republican leaders is longstanding, with Cornyn previously calling Paxton a “source of embarrassment” due to his legal troubles, while Paxton has consistently aligned himself with Trump, even appearing at the January 6th rally in Washington, D.C.

With Trump’s influence looming large over the Republican Party, experts believe that his involvement—whether through an endorsement or silence—could heavily influence the outcome of the primary race.
