Vice President Kamala Harris will be in Houston on Wednesday for a private fundraiser event and to pay respects at Sheila Jackson Lee’s memorial.
The presumptive Democratic nominee for president, will return to Houston on Wednesday for a private campaign event organized by Democratic activist Sima Ladjevardian. According to the Houston Chronicle, Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo and U.S. Reps Al Green and Lizzie Fletcher are expected to attend the event.
Harris’ campaign said the fundraiser will pull in $2.5 million.
After the event, Harris is set to deliver a speech at the Black sorority Sigma Gamma Rho’s 60th International Biennial Boule.
On Thursday, she will pay her respects to former U.S. Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee, who recently died from pancreatic cancer. In a statement, Harris said Jackson Lee was a “dear friend” of hers.
“She was relentless—one of our nation’s fiercest, smartest, and most strategic leaders in the way she thought about how to make progress happen,” Harris wrote. “There was never a trite or trivial conversation with the Congresswoman. She was always fighting for the people of Houston and the people of America.”
Harris is scheduled to attend the Celebration of Life Services for Jackson Lee starting at 11 a.m. at Fallbrook Church. Former President Bill Clintont, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi are also expected to attend the service.
This is Harris’ third trip to Texas in the last month. On July 10, she visited Dallas where she spoke at the Alpha Kappa Alpha’s annual convention. And last week, Harris traveled to Houston where she spoke at the American Federation of Teachers’ national convention and she was also briefed on the ongoing recovery efforts after Hurricane Beryl.
President Joe Biden recently visited Texas to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the Civil Rights Act at the Lyndon B. Johnson Library in Austin.
