Democratic Leaders Launch Convention in El Paso

From Thursday, June 6, to Saturday, June 8, El Paso will host the Texas Democratic Convention, drawing thousands of delegates to the city.

During the event, prominent state and national political figures will engage with party members through training sessions and special interest caucuses.

The convention kicked off with a reception featuring speeches from former Congressman and presidential candidate Beto O’Rourke, former Congresswoman Gabby Giffords, Rep. Veronica Escobar, Sen. César Blanco, Texas Democratic Party Chairman Gilberto Hinojosa, and others.

“We face a significant challenge in November: to elect Democrats across the board, reelect Joe Biden, and ensure Paul’s election to the U.S. Senate,” Hinojosa stated when discussing his primary objective for the convention. “We aim to gain enough seats to flip the Texas House and secure Democratic victories here in El Paso County.”

Hinojosa emphasized that the party’s focus will be on voter engagement and empowerment.

Rep. Escobar expressed her excitement about the event, saying, “It’s incredibly exciting to have Democrats from across Texas—rural and urban communities alike—gather here in El Paso to discuss our priorities.”

Escobar hopes the convention will foster productive conversations on bodily autonomy, immigration reform, housing, and fully funding education.

This marks the first time in over two decades that the Texas Democratic Convention has been held in El Paso. Hinojosa highlighted the city’s leadership in securing the event, stating, “El Paso is a great Democratic city. The local leadership did an outstanding job promoting it as a prime location for our convention. After 22 years, it was time to return.”
