Was Gov. Greg Abbott Pushed by Trump to Announce an Election Audit?

After Trump sent a letter to Gov. Greg Abbott asking him to audit election results despite countless evidence proving he won Texas fair and square, Abbott has finally given in to the pressure.

In recent remarks, Abbott – who will face stiff competition among the most conservative in the gubernatorial race – revealed that he is working with an audit of the 2020 elections in the state’s four largest counties.

During an interview with Fox News on Sunday, host Chris Wallace questioned Abbott on the insistence to audit the election, underscoring the fact that Trump had evidently won by an overwhelming majority.

“Isn’t it just a terrible waste of taxpayer money to have an audit in a state that everybody says went fine and that President Trump won by 600,000 votes, and aren’t you contributing to this undermining confidence in our election process?” Wallace asked.

“There are audits of every aspect of government,” Abbott said. “Why do we audit everything in this world but people raise their hands in concern when we audit elections, which is fundamental to our democracy?”

According to Insider News, Abbott went on to say that there were already election audits in progress, although Wallace noted that the audits in the latest four counties were new and launched “within hours” of Trump’s letter.

After Trump issued his letter on Thursdaay, the Texas Secretary of State’s office ordered an audit of four of the most populous Texas counties – Harris, Dallas, Tarrant, and Collin counties. Of those counties, Biden won the popular vote in Harris, Dallas, and Tarrant counties, while Trump won in Collin.

Harris County elections administrator Isabel Longoria said her office hadn’t heard any details of what the state’s plans are as of noon Friday, as reported by the Texas Tribune, Longoria said the county has already confirmed the results of the elections several times.

“If people want to hear it again and again and again and again, that nothing’s wrong — great,” she said. “But at what point are you going to be willing to hear the truth, that nothing was wrong with the November 2020 elections?”

It is also worth noting that there has been a vacancy at the state auditor’s office since 2016.
