Texas Democrats are launching a new initiative to unseat U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz, just after he warned Republicans that he is in a tough race.
“Texas Offense,” the Democratic initiative, was created to support U.S. Rep. Colin Allred in his bid to unseat Cruz in the senate race.
“On Nov. 5, I’m going to defeat Ted Cruz,” Allred said on Sunday.
The new initiative comes just after Cruz warned Republicans that he is in a tough race.
“Everyone says look, there’s no way you can lose. It’s Texas. You’re Republican. It’s a reelection,” Cruz said at the Republican National Convention. “Every crazy wild-eyed leftist in New York City or Chicago or San Francisco, they go online and they give to whoever’s running against me … Look, they are coming after us.”
Cruz said that he nearly lost his seat against Beto O’Rourke in 2018 and that Democrats see him as vulnerable. He also warned that if President Joe Biden decided to leave the presidential race, his campaign against Allred will be even more difficult. His fears became true.
Now, Democrats are using the momentum from Vice President Kamala Harris’ campaign to rally around Allred and launch a new offensive against Cruz.
“By championing a statewide abortion ban that forces women to flee their state for lifesaving health care, abandoning Texans during a statewide freeze for a Cancun vacation and voting no on capping insulin costs — Texans know they can’t count on Ted Cruz,” Allred’s campaign manager said in a statement. “Congressman Allred is building a broad coalition that will beat Cruz and give Texans the leadership they deserve in the Senate.”
Currently, Cruz is leading Allred by 3 points in the most recent polls, but Allred has managed to close the distance rapidly, as a previous poll showed Cruz leading him by 11 points.
“In 100 days, we can say adios to Cruz and send him on a one-way flight to Cancun,” State Senator Carol Alvarado said on Sunday.
